About The Candidates

I observed with interest as Montréal was inundated with coroplast posters during the latest election campaigns. Public reaction to this intrusion was swiftly manifested in the defacement of a large number of these placards. Graffiti and other such modifications often emphasize the innate strangeness of these politician portraits and frequently render candidates more sympathetic than they appear in their pristine publicity shots. Wanting to continue the informal dialogue initiated by these clandestine interventions, I photographed the vandalized placards, cropping candidate portraits to exclude party alliance and text with the intention of distancing each person from his/her political identity. I then printed these photographs as posters and inserted them back into each candidate’s respective constituency. In September 2006 these activities were documented in the form of an on-line presentation in collaboration with le Centre des arts actuels Skol. An image from The Candidates was also used to produce posters advertising Skol’s twentieth anniversary programming and for the cover of their annual catalogue.
